The Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers will play outdoors in 2017, according to ESPN's Scott Burnside.
The game is likely to be played at Heinz Field but it remains undetermined whether it will be the 2017 Winter Classic or part of the stadium series that will be held a few weeks later, Burnside reports.
The NHL has yet to name the host city for the Winter Classic. The league is determining whether Toronto should be the site for the Winter Classic despite hosting the World Cup of Hockey in September and the World Junior Championship in December of 2016. The Canadian Football League's Grey Cup in November will also be in Toronto.
For Heinz Field to host the Winter Classic on Jan. 1, 2017, the Steelers would have to be willing to surrender the final Sunday of the NFL regular season. The Winter Classic's date could also be moved. The game was previously moved to Jan. 2 in 2012, when the Winter Classic was held in Philadelphia.
Pittsburgh previously hosted the Winter Classic at Heinz Field in 2011 against the Washington Capitals.
