The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to trade center Eric Staal to the New York Rangers.
Carolina will receive two second-round picks and 19-year-old prospect Aleksi Saarela in return for Staal.
The Hurricanes will also be retaining 50% of Staal’s contract.
Staal, 31, has played with the Hurricanes since the 2003–2004 season. He was named captain prior to the 2010 season.
He will be leaving a team that also has brother Jordan Staal on its roster, but joins brother Marc Staal in New York.
Staal waived his no-trade clause to allow the deal to be completed.
