You know someone was trying waaaay too hard when they saddled Toronto Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer with the unfortunate nickname "Optimus Reim." It's so forced it makes you wish everyone had just given in and settled for "Reimsy."
But the one guy that matters, Reimer himself, seems to dig the awkward sobriquet. And so, after two seasons wearing a mask generically adorned with Leafs logos on the side panels and his number 34 on the chin, he's transforming his look.
These images, posted this afternoon on Twitter by David Alter from the Fan 590 in Toronto, show Optimus Prime (the leader of the good Transformers, for the uninitiated) against a background of devastation on the left panel, with a Autobot logo on the chin. You don't need to be a fan of metal-on-metal violence to agree that it's a huge upgrade.
Reimer is slated to debut the mask tonight against the New York Rangers on Hockey Night In Canada.
