When it comes to matters of goalmouth larceny, we here at Home Ice prefer a sensational stop born of flawless technique over one fueled by blind desperation. But man, those can be an awful lot of fun, too.
Take this beauty from this Friday action between Wisconsin and St. Cloud State. Badgers goaltender Joel Rumpel looks to be dead to rights after a rebound pops out front to SCSU forward Tarzan (that's our best guess)...until his stick flies out of his hands, slides across the crease and deflects away a sure goal. Amazing, right? Of course, if he threw his stick, the goal would have counted. Can't chuck the lumber. But since it appeared to be knocked free by his own defender, the Huskies were bathed not in red light and tasted naught by the bitterness of their own tears.
