Johnny Boychuk is off the hook.
TSN's Bob McKenzie tweeted this morning that Boston's bruising defender won't face supplemental discipline for the forearm shiver he delivered to the head of Chicago superstar Jonathan Toews during the second period of last night's 3-1 Blackhawks win. The league reviewed the play but found no cause for suspension.
Right or wrong, it's a decision that will continue the narrative of the NHL's inconsistent commitment to reducing head trauma and of a differing set of standards for calls made on and off the ice during the playoffs. Toews sat out the entire third period but joined his teammates for post-game celebrations. He's listed as having an upper-body injury, but is expected to play in Game 6 Monday night when the Hawks could clinch the Stanley Cup.
