Hockey Canada confirmed Sunday morning what hockey fans had suspected for months: Sidney Crosby wear the C in Sochi.

The Pittsburgh Penguins star was the obvious choice for the honor. Crosby scored the overtime goal against the United States to clinch the gold medal in Vancouver in 2010, cementing his status as one of Canada's greatest hockey heroes. He currently leads the NHL in scoring and is the most recognizable face in the game.

Jonathan Toews and Shea Weber will wear the alternate's A.

"Sidney, Jonathan and Shea have been leaders on the international stage in the past, as well as with their NHL teams,” Mike Babcock, head coach of Canada’s Men’s Olympic Team said in a statement. “These three players will be at the forefront of our efforts in Sochi, but we are confident we have 25 players on our roster that will lead in their own way and allow our team to be successful.”

FLEMING: Why Sidney Crosby is actually underrated

Crosby joins Pavel Datsyuk (Russia), Henrik Zetterberg (Sweden), Zdeno Chara (Slovakia) and Tomas Plekanec (Czech Republic) as NHL stars named to captain their teams at Sochi. Team USA is expected to announce its captain next week.

Hockey Canada also announced that veteran Caroline Ouellette will captain the women's team. The 34-year-old forward has competed on the Olympic stage three times previously, winning gold in Salt Lake City, Torino and Vancouver. Hayley Wickenheiser will wear the A in every game, with Jayna Hefford and Catherine Ward rotating the other.
