2014 NHL playoffs injury update: Teemu Selanne sits in Dallas; Zetterberg skates

A few highlights coming out of today's morning skates:

Look, everyone loves Teemu Selanne. Everyone wants to see him end his brilliant NHL career on a high. But his lack of foot speed has really caught up to him in the Ducks' series against the Stars and he was particularly ineffective on Monday night in Dallas. Coach Bruce Boudreau has to worry about winning games, not Selanne's legacy. This was the right call for his team.

In any case, prepare for a barrage on online vitriol:

Could the captain be back in uniform for Detroit in Game 4?

The easiest, and stupidest, thing to do at this time of year is rush back from an injury. No one is questioning Zetterberg's heart, but one hard skate seems like a pretty small sample size to determine the health of his surgically repaired back. He'll make the call after tomorrow's practice, but I'm guessing he sits out at least one more contest before seriously considering his chances of really competing in Game 5 in Boston.

The St. Louis Blues could be short a C as well.

There's a lot of buzz out of St. Louis that Backes will dress for tonight's Game 4 in Chicago, but that seems like a dubious bet in the wake of the head shot he took from Brent Seabrook over the weekend. We should know more after the team's skate concludes.

Nothing to see here:

I assume this is just a chance to rest some tired bones. Thanks to a couple of OT shifts, Chicago's Keith is averaging 32:10 TOI through the first three games, second only to the Blues' Alex Pietrangelo (32:47). He'll be good to go for Game 4 tonight.
