Fischbacher wins super-G gold; Vonn finishes third

WHISTLER, British Columbia (SI.com) -- Austria's Andrea Fischbacher stole the show from U.S. star Lindsey Vonn on Saturday at Whistler Creekside.

Skiing two spots following what looked like a winning run from Vonn, Fischbacher won the women's super-G in spectacular fashion. Her winning time of 1:20.14 was 0.49 ahead of Tina Maze of Slovenia and 0.74 ahead of Vonn, who took bronze.

"I didn't let my skis run and I was not as clean as I could have been on the bottom," Vonn told CTV after the race. "That's why I lost the gold medal today."

Vonn's medal adds to the best Olympic performance in the history of U.S. skiing. The U.S. now has seven Alpine medals, topping the Team USA bunch in Sarajevo in 1984, which won three gold and two silver. Here, the tally is one gold, three silver and three bronze. Vonn took gold in the women's downhill Wednesday.

Vonn drew start No. 17 and entered the race as the heavy favorite, having clinched the World Cup super-G title. In the last two years Vonn has won 18 World Cup races and two World Cup overall titles, but Fischbacher, who was third in the World Cup super-G standings heading into the Games, was the best skier on the day. The 24-year-old Austrian placed fourth in the downhill, so this result was sweet redemption for her.

Because American Julia Mancuso was not ranked in the top 15 in the world in super-G, she was subject to a random draw from start numbers 1-7 and 23-30. She drew big No. 1, the dreaded "Hole slot.'' She led the race early with a time of 1:21.50, but finished ninth.

The slalom and giant slalom are the only remaining alpine events for the men and women.
