Russia says it foiled suicide bomb plot before Sochi Olympics
A Russian counter-terrorism official said Monday that authorities thwarted a suicide bombing plot ahead of the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, according to Russia’s Tass news agency.
Female suicide bombers had planned to smuggle explosives aboard airplanes hidden in tubes of hand cream, deputy foreign minister Oleg Syromolotov said. The alleged plotters of the attack were arrested in Austria and France after several nations cooperated to foil the scheme, Syromolotov said.
Russia was on high alert for terrorism plots during the Sochi games, due to its proximity to the volatile republics of Chechnya and Dagestan.
Syromolotov spoke in front of the Russian parliament Monday to urge Western nations to cooperate with Russia to stop terrorism in the wake of the attacks in Paris.
