Pau Gasol is considering skipping the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro because of concern over the Zika virus, according to the Associated Press.
He said that the uncertainty surrounding Zika and its effects have prompted him and other Spanish athletes to re-evaluate whether traveling to Brazil for the Games is worth the risk.
“It wouldn’t surprise me to see some athletes deciding not to participate in the games to avoid putting their health and the health of their families at risk,” Gasol said. “I’m thinking about (whether or not to go). Just like every athlete, or any other person considering going to Rio, should be thinking about it.”

Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that has been linked to birth defects in children and neurological problems in adults. The virus has become prevalent in Brazil because of its tropical climate.
Several other athletes, including golfer Rory McIlroy and soccer players Hope Solo and Alex Morgan, have also expressed their fear of contracting the virus.
Last week, 150 health experts called for the Olympics to be postponed or moved in response to Zika, a proposition the World Health Organization said was not necessary.
