Spanish center Marc Gasol will miss the Rio Olympics as he continues his recovery from a broken foot, a source confirmed to SI.com.

Spanish newspaper ABC firstreported the news. Gasol injured his right foot playing with the Memphis Grizzlies in February and has been sidelined since. Spain included Gasol in its preliminary Olympic roster, but he was considered a long shot to be ready for the games. He will continue the rehab process to prepare for the start of the NBA season in October.

Gasol, 31, is a critical piece of the Spanish front line along with older brother Pau, who remains a go-to player in the post at age 36. Spain won silver medals at the last two Olympics, falling to the United States both times; however, the Spanish remain one of the strongest challengers in the tournament after winning the 2015 EuroBasket tournament.

Spain opens Group B play against Croatia on August 7.
