Controlled explosion carried out at Olympic basketball arena in Rio

Fans were held out of Carioca Arena 1 in Rio as a suspicious package was exploded.

A controlled explosion was carried out at Carioca Arena 1 before a basketball game between Spain and Nigeria on Thursday night, according to the Associated Press’s Brian Mahoney.

A suspicious package was found inside the venue, and exploded on the scene while media members and volunteers were inside the arena. The game began as scheduled, but the seats were empty for a good portion of the first quarter.

According to Matt Slater of the Press Association, the suspicious package was a bad containing an electronic device, a pair of socks and a jacket,

This is the third controlled explosion that has been carried out in Rio; A package was destroyed at Macarana Stadium days before the games began, and during a cycling event on Aug. 6, police had to blow up an unattended bag.
