Chile started hot, with two goals in the opening 14 minutes, then fought off a feisty underdog in Australia to take their opening Group B match 3-1 at Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba.

Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez got it started in the 12th minute, rifling home from close range, before teammate Jorge Valdivia doubled that advantage with a sumptuous strike from the edge of the box. Australia's all-time leading scorer and New York Red Bulls star Tim Cahill got the Socceroos on the board with a header in the 35th minute to cut into the deficit.  

Australia had its chances in the second half, but Chile never relented and Jean Beausejour dealt the final blow with a long, low strike in stoppage time to secure the three points. Chile kept pace with the Netherlands atop the group, while Australia is ahead of defending champion Spain on goal differential with all having played one game apiece.
