Sebastian Coates has joined Sunderland on a season-long loan from Liverpool, the club announced Monday.
The defender has made 24 appearances for Liverpool since Aug. 2011.
Prior to joining Liverpool, Coates played for Nacional in Uruguay.
Coates has also collected 15 caps for Uruguay, including playing in the 2014 World Cup. The 23-year-old played his first senior-level international match in the 2011 Copa America, where he won the Young Player of the Tournament award.
He is Sunderland's eighth signing of the summer.
