Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp expects Jermain Defoe to sign with the club during January's transfer window, Paul Smith of the London Evening Standard reports.
Defoe, 32, signed with MLS's FC Toronto in February following five seasons with Tottenham Hotspur. He was reportedly on the market earlier this year, but Toronto decided to wait before making a move.
Smith reports Defoe is expected to sign a three-year contract that will pay him £90,000 a week.
Redknapp has a long history with Defoe after previously signing him with Tottenham and Portsmouth. He commented on acquiring Defoe earlier this year when a deal with Toronto fell through, via Smith.
Redknapp said at the time: “We tried all day with Jermain. He was keen to come. We agreed a deal with Toronto but they wouldn’t release him. There is every chance he will come in January. Almost certainly, I think we will go back in for him. I’ve signed him so many times. I’ve taken him everywhere.”
Defoe led Toronto with 11 goals this season, but the club finished 11-8-15 and missed the playoffs.
QPR has started the Premier League season 2-1-7 and is in 19th place. They play Manchester City on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET.
