Argentine soccer player dies after being attacked following match
Argentine soccer player Franco Nieto has died after hooligans attacked him in a parking lot following a match, according to BBC.
Nieto, who was the captain of local team Tiro Federal, was kicked and punched by the attackers and struck in the head by a stone, according to his cousin, Pablo Nieto.
Pablo Nieto said three people surrounded Franco Nieto as he was walking to his car with his wife and one-month-old daughter and the attack began. A local police chief said three people have been detained in connection to the attack, according to BBC.
Nieto, who was 33, died on Wednesday after being operated on at a hospital on Tuesday. According to BBC, he is the 15th person to die from soccer-related violence in Argentina this year.
Nieto's team was playing the Chacarita Juniors, and the match was stopped early after the referees sent eight players off for fighting.
