Barcelona announced Monday that it has terminated the contract of director of football Andoni Zubizarreta.
Zubizarreta had been the club's director since July 2010.
From Barcelona's statement:
The President, in the name of the Club, thanks Andoni Zubizarreta for his contribution, dedication and professionalism over the last four years in his role at the head of the Club’s football area.
The 53-year-old Zubizarreta was a goalkeeper for Barcelona between 1986 and 1994, winning the European Cup with the club in 1992.
Zubizarreta's assistant Carles Puyol, a former star defender for Barcelona and the Spanish national team, also announced Monday that he was resigning his post.
Last week, Barcelona was denied in its appeal of a transfer ban for the entirety of 2015 by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The penalty, initially handed down by FIFA in April amid concerns about the international transfers of players under 18 years old, means Barcelona will have to be inactive for the next two transfer windows.
Barcelona has 38 points through 17 games and is tied with Atletico Madrid for second on the La Liga table behind Real Madrid.
