Toronto FC announced on Friday that it has loaned striker Gilberto to CR Vasco da Gama in his native Brazil.

Toronto FC was one over the MLS limit of three Designated Players after acquiring Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore this offseason.

“This move was necessary in order for us to be roster and budget compliant for the start of the 2015 season. While necessary it also allows us to gain flexibility and options both today and in the future,” Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a news release. “We’d like to thank Gilberto for his contributions to Toronto FC and wish him well this season.”

Gilberto was signed in December 2013. He scored seven goals and recorded five assists in 32 combined appearances for Toronto FC last season.
