Portland Timbers midfielder Ben Zemanski tore his ACL during Sunday's preseason match against the Vancouver Whitecaps, Jamie Goldberg of The Oregonian reports.

Just 26 minutes into the Timbers' preseason match against the Whitecaps on Sunday, Zemanski was carted off the field with a leg injury.

"It's tough," Timbers coach Caleb Porter said. "That's sports. Things can happen that you don't predict. You got to manage them. You get injuries. We've had injuries before. You certainly don't like to get one in a preseason game when you are preparing to, hopefully, have the group out there that you thought would be out there."

• USMNT forward Bobby Wood (knee) out at least two months

Zemanski earned his spot in the starting lineup as a replacement for team captain Will Johnson, who suffered a broken leg last fall.

The Timbers open the regular season on Saturday, March 7, against Real Salt Lake. They finished 12-9-13 last season, missing the playoffs.
