Manchester United forward Robin van Persie will not play in Sunday’s match against Manchester City as he recovers from an ankle injury, Man United coach Louis van Gaal said.

Van Persie, who returned to training this week, has been out since injuring his ankle in 2-1 loss to Swansea City on Feb. 21 and has missed the squad’s last six matches, five of which have been Manchester United victories.

Van Persie was the club’s leading scorer at the time of the injury. He has 10 goals and two assists in 24 games in the Premier League.

Van Gaal also said that he will take a "wait and see" approach over the potential availability of defenders Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw.

Shaw has missed the last five Premier league games, and Smalling missed the Manchester United's 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Manchester United is third in the Premier League this season, one point behind Arsenal for second place and eight points behind leader Chelsea.
