Newcastle United stayed in the English Premier League with a 2-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday, while Hull City was relegated to the second-tier Championship after failing to capitalize on numerous chances in a 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

Jonas Gutierrez secured Newcastle's status by scoring his team's second goal, and his first since returning from a battle with testicular cancer.

In the final day's other significant action, Liverpool confirmed its place in the Euopa League despite a 6-1 loss to Stoke City that suddenly puts manager Brendan Rodgers squarely on the hot seat. Liverpool was able to hold on to its European place because Southampton couldn't manage to topple last year's champions Manchester City, losing 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester. As it is, the Saint finish the season in seventh place, two points behind Liverpool.

Both of the EPL's MLS-bound midfielders – Liverpool's Steven Gerrard and Manchester City's Frank Lampard – scored in what will likely be their last appearances in the competition. Gerrard scored Liverpool's only goal in the second half of Liverpool's loss, while Lampard opened the scoring in Manchester City's win.

Gerrard will now move to Los Angeles to join up with the defending champion LA Galaxy, while Lampard will move to New York to help NYCFC turn around its struggling campaign.

Championship Sunday ended, appropriately, with the lifting of the EPL trophy by Chelsea, following its 3-1 win over Sunderland at Stamford Bridge.
