How, exactly, did Philippe Coutinho not score?

Coutinho, one of Liverpool's star attacking talents, had a wide open net at his disposal in the Reds' UEFA Europa League knockout first leg against Manchester United, but David De Gea sprung to his right and managed to swat his attempt away at the goal line, keeping the Manchester United deficit at 1-0.

In the first meeting between the Premier League rivals in European competition, Liverpool took the lead after Daniel Sturridge converted a penalty kick. Coutinho threatened to put Louis van Gaal's side in a bigger early deficit at Anfield, but De Gea came to the rescue.

Watch his sprawling save below:

De Gea couldn't keep it at 1-0 for the long haul, as Roberto Firmino capitalized off a poor clearance attempt in the second half to give Liverpool a 2-0 win.

The second leg takes place at Old Trafford next Thursday.
