Wayne Rooney’s home was targeted by thieves on Wednesday as the Manchester United star played a testimonial match at Old Trafford, according to The Guardian.
“Cheshire police have launched an investigation following an attempted burglary at an address in Prestbury. The incident is believed to have occurred at approximately 9 p.m. on Wednesday 3 August in the Chelford Road area," police said. “Officers went to the address and conducted a full search of the local area and were unable to find any trace of the offender.”
The burglars were scared off by Rooney’s alarm system, The Manchester Evening News reports.
The incident occurred during Rooney’s testimonial, which honored the veteran footballer with a match between Manchester United and his former club, Everton. His wife and three sons were with him at the match, according to The Guardian.
The exact nature of the break-in remains unclear.
Manchester United will face Leicester City in the Community Shield on Sunday.
