Dirk Nowitzki's journey to the ceremonial first pitch in tonight's World Series Game 3 was unexpectedly indirect. The Dallas Mavericks star was on the Texas Rangers' shortlist of suggested ceremonial pitchers, but was rejected without explanation by Major League Baseball.  One twitter protest and media outcry later, MLB reversed course and allowed Nowitzki to pitch.

Based on the picture attached to a tweet from Nowitzki's NBA teammate Brian Cardinal, the Finals MVP is already in uniform and prepared to throw out the first pitch. Nowitzki last threw out an opening pitch before the Rangers' June 25 game against the New York Mets. Game 3 is scheduled to start at 8:05 ET.
