The Associated Press reports that Democratic congressman, Bobby Rush of Illinois, compared the NCAA to the Mafia in reference to its contentious relationship with student-athletes.

“I think you would compare the NCAA to Al Capone and to the Mafia,” Rush said.

The statement was made at a congressional forum on the “back-room deals, payoffs and scandals” in college sports. The NCAA has been mired in scandals occurring at various high-profile programs such as Ohio State University and the University of Miami.  Recently, new legislation was approved granting student-athletes $2,000 in addition to their full-scholarships and more rigid academic standards.
