Patriots Release DT Albert Haynesworth

The New England Patriots have waived defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, according to the Boston Herald. Other teams will have until tomorrow afternoon to claim his contract.

Haynesworth was in his first year with the Patriots after being acquired in July from the Washington Redskins. New England provided a fifth round draft choice in the 2013 NFL draft in return for the former Pro-Bowl defensive lineman.

Haynesworth signed a seven-year $100 million contract with the Redskins in 2009 but never lived up to expectations. His relationship became strained with the team after incoming head coach Mike Shanahan wanted to implement a 3-4 defense, which is not one Haynesworth felt he fit into.
