The injury-plagued Houston Texans signed former quarterback Jake Delhomme, according to the Associated Press. Delhomme last played with the Cleveland Browns. He was cut from the team in July.

Delhomme will act as a backup for rookie starter T.J. Yates goes down. Houston added Kellen Clemens last week, as well, and it's not yet clear if Delhomme will be second or third string.

"He relishes that role, and he's looking forward to contributing to the team," Delhomme's agent Rick Smith told the AP. "He keeps himself in shape, he's been throwing a bunch." The Texans were forced to go with their backup Matt Leinart after starter Matt Schaub was lost for the season. Leinart then went down after breaking his collarbone.
