Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard announced yesterday that he would donate $1.2 million to the Philadelphia School District, MLB.com reports.

Howard’s donation will go toward uniforms and athletic equipment for area schools. The donation was announced at an event in the Mayor’s Reception Room in City Hall, the Mayor, local student athletes, and representatives of the Philadelphia Phillies organization were present. The eight-year Phillies veteran signed a five-year $125 million contract extension with Philadelphia in April of 2010.
