Navy is expected to join the Big East as a football-only member, according to CBS Sports, however the Midshipmen aren’t likely to become part of the reshuffled conference until after 2013.
CBS reports that in order for Navy to join the Big East, there are several orders of business that need to be taken care of in terms of scheduling and television contracts.
"We're breaking away from a lifelong commitment as an independent and we have a better television deal than a lot of conferences," Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk told CBS. "We can't do that without a mutual understanding with the Big East. The good news is [Big East commissioner] John [Marinatto] has been receptive of talking this through."
Last week the Big East made news when they accepted Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, SMU, and the University of Central Florida into the conference. The conference had been forced to reorganize after a slew of schools left over a period over several months, leaving the one-time powerhouse with just Connecticut, Rutgers, USF, Cincinnati and Louisville.
