Melvin Mora Retires After 13 Seasons In Major Leagues

After 13 seasons in the major leagues, Melvin Mora has decided to call it a career, according to Rafael Rojas of Meridiano Deportes.

While he also enjoyed stints with the Mets, Rockies and Diamondbacks, Mora spent the bulk of his career with the Baltimore Orioles, where he played third base, shortstop and all over the outfield between 2000 and 2009. His best season came in '04, when he hit .340 with 27 homers and 104 RBIs, plus led the American League with a .419 on-base percentage.

Mora turned 39 in February and showed signs of sharp decline this past season. He played in just 42 games for the Diamondbacks this year, managing a .228/.244/.276 clip as a backup third baseman. He was released in June.

The Venezuelan native broke into the majors with the Mets in 1999 and made an immediate impact, going 6-for-14 with two RBIs and three runs scored in the '99 NLCS against the Braves.

Mora is also known for committing to the Venezuelan national team for the 2006 World Baseball Classic; he later pulled out of the event, however, after losing the starting third base job to Miguel Cabrera.
