Joe Philbin Away From Packers Indefinitely, Mourning Loss Of Son Michael

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy said today that offensive coordinator Joe Philbin will be away from the team indefinitely, continuing to mourn the loss of his son Michael.

Choking up and calling the loss a "punch in the heart," McCarthy told ESPN that Philbin wasn't with the team for today's practice and there's no timetable for him to return. McCarthy and his offensive assistant coaches will divide up Philbin's responsibilities for the time being.

Divers found the body of Michael Philbin, 21, in the Fox River on Monday. The Oshkosh, Wisc., police department issued a statement Wednesday saying the cause of death was freshwater drowning, according to an autopsy. No evidence suggesting foul play was found.
