The Oakland Athletics have signed free-agent outfielder/designated hitter Jonny Gomes, according to CBS Sports.

Gomes hit .209/.325/.389 with 14 home runs and 43 RBI in 120 games between the Cincinnati Reds and the Washington Nationals last season. It is believed he will have a better value in the American League where he can not only play outfield but can also serve as a designated hitter against left-handed starters. The 31-year-old has a notoriously better split against left handed pitchers. Over the course of his career, the right-handed batter has hit .281/.375/.501 against southpaws, and just .224/.306/.427 against righties.
