Olsen spent the 2009 season struggling to overcome shoulder tendinitis and later having surgery on a left labrum tear. As a result he posted a 6.03 ERA in just 11 starts for the Nationals. In 2010 Olsen posted a 4-8 record with a 5.56 ERA in 81 innings pitched for Washington. Last year Olsen tentatively agreed to a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he was released In May before throwing a pitch.
