Red Sox' Bobby Valentine: Carl Crawford May Not Be Ready For Opening Day

Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford underwent surgery on his left wrist a month ago, and it now appears unlikely that he'll be ready for the start of the 2012 season.

"I wouldn't be surprised if Carl's a few weeks into the season before he's really ready," new Sox manager Bobby Valentine told Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe. "I wouldn't be surprised nor disappointed if that's what nature dictates as his healing process."

Crawford signed a seven-year, $142 million contract with the Red Sox a year ago, and he was disappointing in his first season in Boston. The 10-year veteran batted just .255 with 11 home runs. It's now doubtful he'll be ready to bounce back early this season.
