Welker caught an NFL leading 122 catches in 2011 for nine touchdowns. Over the past five years, the undersized wide out has hauled in at least 110-or-more catches four times as a member of the Patriots potent passing attack. Earlier reports indicated that the two sides had been in discussions on a potential new deal. By giving Welker a franchise tag, the team will have the entire upcoming season to negotiate a new deal.
