The New England Patriots are expected to place their franchise tag on Wes Welker today, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Welker caught an NFL leading 122 catches in 2011 for nine touchdowns. Over the past five years, the undersized wide out has hauled in at least 110-or-more catches four times as a member of the Patriots potent passing attack.
Earlier reports indicated that the two sides had been in discussions on a potential new deal. By giving Welker a franchise tag, the team will have the entire upcoming season to negotiate a new deal.
