Chris Carpenter To Be Evaluated For Neck Stiffness

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter did not participate in workouts on Friday and will be evaluated for neck stiffness, according to Jennifer Langosch of MLB.com. He is listed as day-to-day.

According to Langosch, Carpenter already missed a side session this week because of stiffness.

"We're just kind of waiting and seeing," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "We're just kind of watching and seeing when it seems right."

Carpenter still has not made his Spring Training debut, though even if he does not get a start for another week, he could still make four starts prior to the regular season, according to Langosch. He is tentatively scheduled to be the team’s Opening Day starter on April 4.

Last season, Carpenter had a 3.45 ERA in a career-high 237.1 regular-season innings for the Cardinals. He added 36 more innings in the postseason, bringing his total up to 273.1 innings.

Update (12:52 p.m.):Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the team is looking into a "nerve-related" issue.
