SMU head basketball coach, Matt Doherty, has been relieved of his position, sources told CBSSports.com.

The Mustangs finished this season with a 13-19 record and a were 4-12 record in Conference USA play. One of the team’s worst performances of the season came against Marshall in the first round of the C-USA tournament where they lost 74-56.

This is the latest dismissal for Doherty, who has struggled to find coaching success since leaving Notre Dame in 2000. The former UNC star bolted after one year to coach at his alma matter, but resigned after three seasons. He also had a one season stint at Florida Atlantic before agreeing to coach SMU. Doherty was a four year starter at UNC as a player, helping the Tar Heels go 117-21 as a player.
