The race for Peyton Manning appeared fairly straightforward, right? It was either the Denver Broncos or the Tennessee Titans -- one or the other, simple as that, yes?

Ehh, not so much. ESPN's Chris Mortensen is now reporting that the San Francisco 49ers have emerged as a darkhorse candidate to sign the superstar free agent QB.

Manning has worked out for 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, Mortensen reports, but he has not yet made the trip to visit the Niners' facility in San Francisco, and it's unknown at this point if he'll ever get around to doing so. At the moment, it looks like a three-team race -- either the Broncos, Titans or 49ers will eventually land the former Indianapolis Colt. But this story has been as fluid as any, so we shall see.
