Royals catcher Salvador Perez had surgery today to repair a tear in his left knee, according to the Associated Press. He will miss at least three months.
With Perez's prolonged absence, the Royals will be scrambling in the coming days and weeks to find a stopgap behind the plate. Managed Ned Yost described the team's need at catcher as "pretty important," saying the team needs to find someone as soon as possible.
"There's not another Sal out there that you can get -- there's just not," Yost said. "The next-best thing is any semblance of a guy that can catch and throw and can hit a little bit and that can cost you young prospects, and we don't want to do that."
Perez, who's only 21 years old, hit .331 in 39 games for the Royals last season after being promoted to the major leagues on Aug. 10. He signed a five-year, $7 million contract extension with the team on Feb. 27.
