Report: Celtics' Jermaine O'Neal Needs Wrist Surgery, Done For Season

Boston Celtics center Jermaine O'Neal will undergo season-ending surgery on his left wrist, according to Chris Forsberg of ESPN Boston.

O'Neal, who also played with a fractured wrist against the Miami Heat in the playoffs last season, has a chronic degenerative wrist condition, and he aggravated the wrist when he fell during a Feb. 20 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. The wrist has not responded to immobilization or physical therapy.

The Celtics signed O'Neal to a two-year contract worth $12 million in the summer of 2010. This injury effectively ends O'Neal's time with the C's -- he will finish out the two years having missed far more games (99) than he played (49).

"Jermaine worked hard to get himself in condition to play this season despite his ongoing wrist issues," Celtics president Danny Ainge said. "He played through pain the entire year and gave us all he could, but unfortunately after the fall against Dallas there simply wasn't anything else he could do. We appreciate his contributions to our team over the last two years."
