Cincinnati Reds closer Ryan Madson hit an unexpected snag on the comeback trail from an elbow injury, failing to hit his target of making a minor-league rehab appearance today. His status going forward is unknown, reports John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

“We’re sorting it out,” Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. “We’ll let you know.”

Madson came down with a sore elbow early in camp and has yet to pitch in a spring training game. He fared well in a simulated game earlier this week, facing four batters, but he hasn't been able to pitch since. It's unclear whether Madson will be ready for the Reds' season opener -- they take on the Miami Marlins on Thursday, April 5. If Madson isn't ready, lefty Sean Marshall is expected to step into the closer role.
