As if the New Orleans Saints hadn't already heard enough bad news this offseason, ESPN's Adam Schefter is now reporting that the Saints are nowhere close to extending the contract of franchise quarterback Drew Brees.

Brees set an NFL single-season record last season with 5,476 yards passing, in a contract year. After finishing out his six-year, $60 million contract in 2011, Brees was unable to work out a long-term deal with the Saints in February. The team slapped him with the franchise tag in March.
Brees has thrown for 40,742 yards and 281 touchdowns in his eight-year NFL career. He's rumored to be seeking a new deal worth $23 million per season, not unlike Peyton Manning's contract with the Denver Broncos. This bad news for the Saints comes on the heels of word that the NFL suspended Scott Fujita, Anthony Hargrove, Will Smith and Jonathan Vilma today for their roles in the Saints' bounty program.
