New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker has signed his $9.5 million franchise tender, a league source has told ESPN.
Welker’s five-year deal with the club ran out following last season. The Patriots had applied a $9.5 million franchise tag on Welker to keep him off of the free-agent market for at least one year. Up until now, the prolific receiver had not signed the tender in hopes of reaching a long term agreement instead.
Welker has led the league in receptions three-times while a member of the Patriots, including last season where he hauled in 122 passes for 1569 yards. He also paced the league in 2009 when he had 123 receptions, and 2007 when he had 112.
