Report: Baltimore Orioles close to contract extension with CF Adam Jones

The Baltimore Orioles are nearing a long-term deal to keep star center fielder Adam Jones with the team, reports FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi. They report the deal is expected to exceed the six-year, $72 million contract signed by Miguel Tejada.

The 26-year-old has spent the past five seasons with Baltimore and is eligible to become a free agent after the season. He currently leads the team in batting average (.311), home runs (14) and RBI (29).

Jones has also seen big increases in his slugging percentage. This season, Jones is slugging .601, far better than his previous career best of .466.

Jones made his first All-Star appearance in 2009 at age 23 and appears poised to make another appearance this season. The Orioles are the surprising leader of the loaded AL East division and currently sit with the American League's best record at 28-17.
