Pedroia injured the thumb in the process of making a diving play to gather a grounder from the Tigers' Danny Worth. Pedroia was able to throw Worth out on the play, but was replaced at second base by Nick Punto at the top of the sixth inning. Pedroia is hitting .295 this year with five home runs, 21 RBI and three steals.
