Despite his renowned career as a player, the job will be Oates' first as a head coach. He served as an assistant to the Tampa Bay Lightning and New Jersey Devils. Oates has developed a reputation for being a good offensive coach, having been one of the league's most dynamic scoring threats as a player.

Oates had a distinguished NHL career as a player, including stints at the Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins and the Capitals, with whom he enjoyed his last productive seasons as a professional. Oates also played for the Philadelphia Flyers, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and the Edmonton Oilers.

Oates replaces Dale Hunter as coach of the Capitals. Hunter left the team after losing in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to the New York Rangers.

UPDATE [1:34 p.m.] The Washington Capitals make it official - Adam Oates is their new head coach.
