Report: Kings, Jonathan Quick 'move forward' on contract extension talks

Two weeks removed from a thrilling run to a Stanley Cup championship, the Los Angeles Kings and standout goaltender Jonathan Quick have begun talks on a contract extension that would ensure the 26-year-old stays in Los Angeles beyond next season.

The Los Angeles Times' Lisa Dillman reported that the new contract talks began over the weekend and "moved forward" on Monday. Quick has one year remaining on his contract, which will pay him $1.8 million next season. After emerging in the Stanley Cup playoffs, Quick is in line for a significant raise in his new contract.

Kings president and general manager Dean Lombardi told the NHL Network he was hoping to work something out sooner rather than later.

"The one thing I do sense is that I do think that both sides want to get something done," Lombardi said, according to The Los Angeles Times. "And that goes without saying. A lot of times the deals don't come together because people aren't ready to make deals. ... But in this case, I get the sense that we have a chance to get something done here before next season."

The Times offers a comparison that could provide some hint to the type of contract Quick might be seeking: Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne, who finished one spot behind Quick in Vezina Trophy voting, signed a seven-year, $49 million contract last summer.

Quick was stellar throughout the Kings' run in the playoffs. He went 16-4 and finished first among playoff goalies in save percentage (.946) and goals-against average (1.41).
