Rays' David Price leaves game after seven innings with apparent back injury

Tampa Bay Rays lefthander David Price was removed from Friday's showdown with Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander before pitching the eighth inning.

Price had thrown just 78 pitches through seven innings, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, but after he warmed up for the eighth, Rays manager Joe Maddon, assistant athletic trainer Paul Harker and the umpires came to the mound -- and Price left with them.

Topkin writes that no reason has been given yet for Price's departure, but Sun Sports showed clips of Price between innings using what appeared to be a heating pad on his back.
