Philadelphia Phillies trade Jim Thome to Baltimore Orioles

UPDATE (6:10 p.m. ET): The Phillies and Orioles have agreed to a trade for Jim Thome and will announce the trade after both teams' games are complete Saturday, Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports. The Phillies get pitcher Kyle Simon and catcher Gabriel Lino in exchange.

ORIGINAL:The Philadelphia Phillies are discussing a trade that would send Jim Thome to the Baltimore Orioles, Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury reported.

Thome, who has been reduced to a pinch-hitting role with the Phillies in the National League, would step in as the Orioles' designated hitter. Thome has just 10 at-bats playing at first base with the Phillies this season. In 62 at-bats this season, Thome is hitting .242 with five homers and an .854 OPS. He would be an immediate boost for the Orioles, which currently rank last in the American League East in runs scored. The Orioles are 4.5 games back of the Yankees in the AL East. Salisbury reported that Thome was still in the dugout with the Phillies for their game against the Miami Marlins on Saturday.
