Dad: Eighth-grade QB Tate Martell commits to Washington

The Washington Huskies took a page out of the book of conference rival USC on Wednesday by unofficially accepting a commitment from a 14-year-old, eighth-grade quarterback.

San Diego native Tate Martell was offered a scholarship three weeks ago, and on Wednesday he accepted, his father, Al, told Erik McKinney of ESPN.com.

Martell can't be given a written offer until Sept. 1, 2016, and he won't sign his letter of intent until February 2017.

Here's a YouTube highlight video of the 5'11", 180-pound Martell posted by QB guru Steve Clarkson.

Clarkson is also the personal coach of Maryland high school QB David Sills, who committed to USC in 2010 as a rising eighth-grader.

"This wasn't a knee-jerk reaction to an offer," Clarkson said of Martell. "After getting over the initial shock of it and talking about it at length, he decided to commit today. It's a chance to go to school where one of his idols [Jake Locker] played."
